Over the centuries graffiti has taken many forms. Some are of historic interest, such as the etchings engraved in stone or wood in ancient buildings. Occasionally the vandal is an artist, creating beautiful works on the sides of freight cars and buildings. More frequently, graffiti embellishes buildings and tunnel walls with unwanted language and offensive pictures. At one time these were difficult to remove, requiring extensive scrubbing and re-painting. More modern anti graffiti coating has since taken over.
