One of the certainties of our being is death. All of us have to confront it and is yet unprepared for it. Honouring the dead is a very old practice that has been constantly changing to fit into the present times. Traditionally, the funeral service took place at the church with chanting of solemn hymns and a speech. But, this practice is changing today, with a lot of people wanting to go for a more personal funeral service for their near and dear one.

Preparing for a funeral could be an extremely painful and tough task, particularly immediately after the death of a relative or someone close. A common misconception that a funeral service is a legal necessity is incorrect as no law makes it compulsory to conduct a funeral service. Secondly, a lot of people have an erroneous belief that a service can be held only in a church. It is to be noted that though traditionally such services were carried out in a church, with the trend of personalizing, many funeral services are being conducted within the premises of the departed. Thirdly, such a personalized service does not mandate use of a casket or even a pastor or clergy to conduct the rituals.

But, in keeping with the idea of a personal funeral service, a lot of thought must be given to the preferences of the deceased person. The selection of music should be from among the personal choices of the deceased, though it is advisable to have soft music. You could select from a live performance or playing pre recorded music.

Some families prefer putting up the personal things of the deceased in a collage, for the gathering to reflect on his or her life. Address is very crucial in all funeral services inclusive of the personal ones. It could be a recital, a song or a personal speech that reflects upon the dead person.

Finally, it is preferable to give the guests gathered at the service some type of a memento that will help them remember the departed forever.

Death is generally followed by overwhelming sorrow and distress, leaving family members and friends inconsolable and sentimentally overwhelmed by the death of a loved one. However, making appropriate arrangements for the funeral still needs to be attended to and this will require the selection of an appropriate casket.

The demise of a family member or a friend can cause untold distress and pain and leave an irreparable gap which cannot be filled by any one else in the world. But it is crucial to overcome that sorrow and make preparations for the funeral proceedings for which an appropriate casket is necessary.

Choosing a suitable casket is very hard, as you would want to buy a good product at a reasonable price when you are just not in a psychological state to bargain. In case the deceased had already made his or her choice known for the casket, or if a specific type of casket is a cultural requirement for the deceased person\’s family then this job becomes much simpler.

You can find caskets in several shapes, designs and sizes for which prices vary accordingly. They are normally divided into two key categories, funeral caskets and burial caskets. Funeral caskets allow for the visitors to glimpse the departed during ceremonies but burial caskets are generally only used at the time of burial.

Caskets come in a range of materials such as metal, fibre, wood and marble. Traditionally, wooden caskets were preferred and choice from different types of wood such as mahogany, maple, oak etc could be made. While wooden caskets are very classy when polished and excellent in terms of quality, they are also more expensive than other options. On the other hand, metal caskets, which are generally cheaper, come in copper, bronze, and stainless steel and are available in an array of colours and patterns.

Eco friendly material based caskets are also getting popular these days with so much stress on safeguarding the planet, particularly among the environmentally conscious people. The material used in them is eco friendly and causes no damage to the ecosystem. These could be your last tribute to the departed if he or she believed strongly in protecting the environment.

Funeral directors offer a great source of support and help to a family that is burdened with the sorrow of the recent death of a loved one. They take care of the intricacies of all the preparations that have to be made, leaving the grieving members to deal with their overwrought emotions without worrying about the details of the service.

Funeral directors offer an excellent source of support and help to a family that is reeling under the sorrow of the recent death of a loved one. They take charge of the whole process of organizing the funeral service and look after every minute detail allowing the family to deal with their loss without facing the troubles of the proceedings.

The task of a funeral director encompasses many responsibilities starting from making arrangements to bring over the deceased’s body from the morgue or the residence to its place of burial or cremation. All sorts of documentation and critical paperwork involved in the process, like acquiring a death certificate, getting all the permissions, organ donation etc comes under the responsibilities of the funeral director.

A good funeral director should be the single point contact for all external vendors starting from florists, musicians, catering services etc. He will have to insert necessary announcements and obituaries in the local publications and might also need to intimate distant family members and friends of the deceased person about the funeral service.

In discussion with the kith and kin of the deceased, the funeral director determines the venue, date and time of funeral service ceremonies like memorial service and burial. He makes preparations for close relatives and friends to come together to express their sorrow and have a last glimpse of the departed before the final rites. On the funeral day, his job finishes only after he oversees all ceremonies until the grave is finally sealed.

In order to carry out these functions towards successful conducting of the funeral ceremony, the funeral director must have essential traits of compassion and a service driven attitude. You should hence ensure that the funeral director you wish to employ has proper licenses and enough experience. He should be known to perform his task sincerely rather than as an external party, which might charge you a lot and not provide the correct type of services.

A Buddhist funeral contains elaborate last rites carried out according to sacred customs and traditions. The funeral ceremony, according to Buddhism, signifies the liberation of the deceased's soul, which was trapped in the futility of existence, and its quest for a new life thereafter.

In a Buddhist funeral, the followers of the faith believe in carrying out detailed rites and rituals during the funeral service. The ceremonies performed during the Buddhist funeral are expected to liberate the deceased person’s soul from the chains of life and enable it to find a transformed and elevated life thereafter where it comes closer to enlightenment.

In a typical Buddhist funeral, the body of the departed is cremated and Buddhist monks in the presence of the bereaved family carry out the last rites. The dormant positive energies are released from the soul by the chanting of appropriate sutras by monks who read from the religious books. While the chanting is on, the deceased is prepared for the funeral and for visitors to pay last respects, so that there is no decomposition even if the cremation is delayed. After washing the body, it is placed in a casket with candles, bouquets, fragrant incense and a picture of the deceased person.

The Abhidharma, a holy Buddhist text is read daily by visiting monks during the funeral days even when the cremation is deferred to accommodate the visitors from distant places.

On the day of the funeral, Buddhist monks perform the last rites and the head monk expresses his condolences to the bereaved family and speaks words of encouragement to them along with homage to the deceased person recounting his life. Other rites like wrapping a white cloth around the coffin during the religious incantation and Pansakula, a custom of delivering virtues and blessings to the soul of the deceased are also performed.

Just before the cremation, a close family member is requested to say a few words about the departed individual. The Buddhist funeral ceremonies end with a special meal for the attendees immediately after the funeral.

A large number of people in Thailand, Tibet, China and a few other Asian nations with a large Buddhist population follow the Buddhist funeral system with some slight alterations according to the local customs.
